Geographic Signals
Deduplicated country and region funding intelligence — where opportunities are open, how much is on the table, and what is closing soon.
Geographic Signals is the place-oriented layer of Pulse. It answers one question in two ways: where in the world is funding open, counted by country and counted by the wider scopes — unions, continents, programme groups — that calls are actually written against.
It replaces the retired Strategic Signals page. The old page's Overview and Strategic tabs duplicated Thematic Intelligence; only its geographic tab was unique, and that is what this page grew out of. /pulse/strategic-signals redirects here.
Countries and Regions are separate lists
A funding call rarely names one place. It names a country, sometimes a state within it, sometimes a treaty grouping the country belongs to — and the catalogue records every one of those tags. Counting tags would tell you very little, so the two lists answer different questions:
- Countries counts each opportunity once per country, folding in every way that country is tagged: its ISO code, its spelled-out name, and any state or province underneath it. An opportunity tagged
US,US-CAandNYis one opportunity in the United States, not three. - Regions keeps supranational scopes and subdivisions as rows of their own — the European Union, Sub-Saharan Africa, Horizon Europe associated countries, California — because "open to the EU" is a real eligibility statement, not a stand-in for its member states.
Deduplication happens server-side, before the page sees a number. The catalogue tags the same place several ways and across two schema versions: GB, UK and United Kingdom are one country; so are eu and EU, and sub-saharan-africa and SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA.
Country shares can add up to more than 100%. One opportunity open to twelve countries counts once in each of them, which is the honest answer to "where can I apply".
The map
The choropleth paints countries by opportunity count. Clicking a painted country selects its card in the Countries list, paging to it if the card is further down, and opens that country's drill-down.
The legend's buckets come from percentiles of the live distribution, and the top bucket closes on the real maximum rather than reading as open-ended — funding concentration is steep enough that "≥ 245" would hide how far the leading country sits above everything else.
Drill-down
Selecting any country or region opens a rail with that place's active opportunities, its strongest disciplines, and its funding-type mix. The selection is written into the URL as ?region=, so a drill-down is a shareable link.
"Browse all opportunities" hands the selection to ArkSearch Browse as a geographic filter — using every raw spelling behind the row, so a place tagged three ways still returns all three.
Where the numbers come from
Counts are computed over the deduplicated V3+V4 catalogue: the same population ArkSearch searches, so a number here and a result count there describe the same set. Aggregates are cached for ten minutes; the refresh control re-reads them on demand and the page shows when the figures were generated.
