Organizations

Register and manage organizations in ArkID -- ARKO identifiers, external identifier linking (ROR, Funder ID, PIC), member roles, and organizational public profiles.

Organizations in ArkID represent institutions, research groups, companies, and other entities that participate in the research ecosystem. Each organization receives a persistent ARKO identifier and can be linked to external registries, associated with members, and connected to projects, products, and funding entities.

Organization Records

The Organizations page (/dashboard/organizations) lists all organizations you are affiliated with. Each record displays:

FieldDescription
ARKOThe persistent organization identifier (e.g., ARKO-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX)
NameThe official name of the organization
RoleYour role within the organization
RORResearch Organization Registry identifier, linking to the global ROR database
Funder IDCrossref Funder Registry identifier for organizations that distribute research funding
PICParticipant Identification Code used in EU framework programmes (Horizon Europe, etc.)

These external identifiers make the organization discoverable and cross-referenceable across international research databases and funding systems.

External Identifier Linking

ArkID supports three external identifier systems for organizations:

ROR (Research Organization Registry)

ROR provides a global, community-curated registry of research organizations. Linking a ROR identifier to your ARKO record connects the organization to an authoritative source of institutional metadata including location, type, relationships with parent/child organizations, and Wikipedia entries. ROR identifiers take the form https://ror.org/XXXXXXXXX.

Funder ID (Crossref Funder Registry)

For organizations that fund research, the Crossref Funder Registry identifier connects the ARKO to the global database of funding bodies. This is particularly useful for mapping funding flows and identifying which organizations are funders versus performers in the research landscape.

PIC (Participant Identification Code)

The European Commission assigns PIC numbers to organizations that participate in EU-funded programmes. Linking a PIC to the ARKO record connects the organization to its EU programme participation history, which is also reflected in the Graph knowledge explorer through CORDIS data.

Organization Public Profiles

Every organization with an ARKO identifier has a public profile at arkid.researchark.eu/:arko. The public profile shows:

  • Organization name and metadata
  • Verification status badge
  • QR code and quick share panel
  • Linked external identifiers (ROR, Funder ID, PIC)
  • Associated entities -- members (ARKU), projects (ARKP), products (ARKD), and funding (ARKF)

Relationship Graph

The organization's public profile includes an interactive relationship graph identical in functionality to researcher profiles. The D3.js force-directed graph displays all entities connected to the organization, with colour-coded nodes for each entity type. Click any node to navigate to its profile. Controls include zoom, reset, re-centre, and SVG download.

This graph is particularly valuable for understanding an organization's research footprint -- which researchers are affiliated, what projects are active, what outputs have been produced, and which funding sources support the work.

Managed Organizations

In addition to organizations you are a member of, ArkID provides a management view for organizations where you have administrative privileges. From the managed organizations page you can update organization details, manage external identifier links, and oversee the roster of affiliated researchers.

Organizations Across ResearchArk

Organization data from ArkID connects to other parts of the ResearchArk ecosystem:

  • Graph -- ARKO-linked organizations appear in the knowledge graph, with connections to their CORDIS participation history, co-funding networks, and collaboration patterns.
  • ArkSphere -- Organization profiles are indexed for discovery, allowing researchers to find and connect with institutions.
  • ArkSearch -- Organizational affiliation data feeds into eligibility filtering when browsing funding opportunities.
